Ready for offshore operations:
MV “Lone” gets DP II upgrade

Hamburg, Germany
November 2011

The MV “Lone” is now in the last stages of upgrading her existing DP 1 system to a DP 2 system. In dry-dock at the German shipyard Norderwerft, the vessel received one additional 1,200 kW bowthruster, two retractable azimuths of 1,200 kW each and three 1,600 kW auxiliary engines to secure the power supply for the redundant dynamic positioning system. To optimize the functionality of the high capacity cranes in offshore operations, the vessel was further equipped with a motion monitoring system.

The installation of the system bears a number of significant advantages: the vessel will be fully self-propelled without the need for tugs or external mooring systems, the vessel reaches optimal maneuverability and has the ability to respond rapidly to changes both in weather conditions as well as in operational requirements.

With these features in place, the MV “Lone” has all the necessary elements for undertaking complex projects in the area of oil and gas field development as well as offshore wind farm support. Within this scope of service, the vessel can provide wet handshake solutions, FPSP mooring support as well as transportation and placement of extraordinary structures on the seabed. In the realm of offshore windfarm support, the vessel can both feed installation units to the field as well as provide installation services for transition pieces.

MV "Lone" Performs SAL’s Heaviest Lift Ever:
8 Reactors for the RPLC Deep Conversion Project

Muroran, Japan – Chaguaramas, Trinidad
May/June 2011

On its maiden voyage, the company’s latest new building MV “Lone” performed SAL’s heaviest lift ever. With its lifting capacity of 2 x 1,000 ts SWL, the vessel loaded 8 reactors weighing up to 1,719 ts and measuring 45 x 8 x 8 m.

As part of the RPLC Deep Conversion Project Phase II in Venezuela, these massive reactors were manufactured in Japan. They are destined for the PDVSA Puerto La Cruz refinery in Venezuela where they facilitate the conversion of heavy and extra heavy crude oil into high quality refined fuel products. The project was awarded to SAL by the Dutch heavy lift specialist Mammoet Logistics BV.

On its voyage, the MV “Lone” first called the Japanese port of Higashi Harima where two hydrocracking reactors were loaded, and continued on to Muroran to take six further hydrotreating reactors on board. From Muroran the vessel sailed through the Panama Canal directly on to the port of Chaguaramas in Trinidad where the reactors are temporarily stored before being carried to their final destination of Puerto La Cruz in Venezuela. After careful preparation, the reactors were discharged in record time: the heaviest reactor of 1,719 ts was set ashore in only 2.5 hours.

Long-term Partner "K" Line Acquires 100 Per Cent of Shares – New Ownership Structure at SAL Schiffahrtskontor Altes Land

Steinkirchen, Germany

With effect from 30th of June 2011, the Japanese shipping company Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line Group) will acquire another 50 per cent of the SAL Group and with that will become the sole shareholder of the company.

Over the past five years, the two companies have developed a successful partnership through their joint venture. The "K" Line Management highly values the global professional expertise of SAL in the field of heavy lift shipping and will retain all current employees including the company’s management after the share transfer.

After more than 40 years in shipping, SAL founders Hans and Claus Heinrich have decided to retire from daily operations but will continue to support the new owner "K" Line as advisors to the board. The current managing partner Lars Rolner will continue to serve the company as CEO in close cooperation with the two current Japanese managing directors Shigehisa Shimazu and Toshio Yamazaki.

"K" Line has a strong commitment to further expand the activities of SAL. In December 2010 and March 2011 SAL introduced the two largest heavy-lift vessels in the world – MV “Svenja” and MV “Lone” – into the market. Both have a lifting capacity of 2000ts SWL, a speed of 20 knots and a Dynamic Positioning System 1 resp. 2. These vessels are just as suited to service demanding offshore projects within the oil and gas industry as they are to assist in the installation of foundations for offshore wind parks. "K" Line is planning to strengthen its portfolio by further expanding this business area. With the addition of the heavy lift segment to its container, bulk, tanker/LNG, and offshore transportation services,  "K" Line will be  offering a one-stop shop for a wide array of industrial clients.

Given the current economic rebound,  "K" Line expects further growth in the oil and gas industries. The SAL fleet is fully prepared to service projects in these industries. Apart from
their unrivalled capacity, the vessels have an “environmental passport” and are certified for ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001, securing the highest standards with respect to health, safety and environmental protection.

The "K" Line Group is dedicated to further developing  the heavy lift segment as one of its core business areas in close cooperation with the SAL management and staff as well as "K" Line’s worldwide network.

The sales price of the shares remains undisclosed.

SAL puts second new building of Type 183 - MV "Lone" - into service

Hamburg/Germany
11th March 2011

She perfectly resembles her sister, is just as strong and can be positioned to maximum precision: SAL puts the new building MV "Lone" into service. Just three months after the heavy-lift shipping company has sent the MV "Svenja" – the world’s largest heavy-lift vessel – on her maiden voyage, the company's fleet has now been expanded by a second vessel of the same type 183. Just like her sister vessel, the heavy lifter was built at Sietas shipyard in Hamburg in only 6 months. She has a lifting capacity of 2,000 tonnes and a speed of 20 knots. While the MV "Svenja" features a Dynamic Positioning System 1 (DP1), the MV "Lone" is equipped with a DP2. It is only the fourth heavy-lift vessel in the world to be equipped with this system. With DP2, its unrivalled speed and its high crane capacity, the MV "Lone" is just as suited to service demanding offshore projects within the oil and gas industry as it is to assist in the installation of foundations for offshore wind parks. On March 11, the heavy-lift vessel was christened at the Überseebrücke bridge in her home port of Hamburg.
